Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a tree that is native to Southeast Asia and is in the same family as the coffee tree (Rubiaceae). The leaves of kratom have been medicinally used as an herbal drug for centuries. It is used as a stimulant, sedative , pain relief, and also as a recreational drug.
Traditionally fresh kratom leaves are chewed. Dried leaves can also be chewed, but are tougher in texture when chewed dry. Kratom can also be obtained in powder form. Many people will mix powdered kratom in with their food and the more adventurous will actually snort it. The dried leaves, like I said, can be chewed but also can be used for tea and smoked. Some will find it easier to just drink the teas since the amount of the dried leaf that needs to be smoked to achieve any desired affect is normally more than what is desirable.
It is popular to actually boil the leaves down to a very potent extract. This extract can then be added to hot water for tea or actually consumed as is.
A low dose of kratom can often produce a stimulating effect whereas a high dose can usually be quite sedating. Those looking to reduce anxiety and stress typically aim for a higher dose.
For those that are looking to achieve benefits to help with social anxiety then a low to medium dose may be optimal. Low dose is typically 2-6 grams and medium would be about 7-15 grams. At a low to medium (stimulating dose) one may notice more alertness, physical energy and possibly even an increase in libido. It is also common to notice yourself become more talkative, friendly, and sociable
A high dose is over 15 grams all the way to 50 grams. 25-50 grams can be too strong for many people however. At these doses your senses will become quite dulled .You will be less sensitive to physical or emotional pain and will become very calm, comfortable and relaxed and ready to sleep very nicely. Many people relate it to the feeling you would get if you were to consume marijuana. Like marijuana you may find yourself enjoying music, television and video games much more than normal. It will be very pleasant to lie down on your back in a semi-darkened room, with eyes closed, and just listen to your favorite music. The higher the dose, the stronger the effects, and the longer they last. Many people report a positive ‘afterglow’ the next day.
The dosages I mentioned are for the actual leaves not the extract. It is important to remember that every person may react differently. I would never start out at the highest dose. It is always smart to start low and adjust based upon your tolerance. It would also be wise to consume kratom on an empty stomach so that you are experiencing your true tolerance level. Kratom will make you drowsy so it is obviously not a bright idea to go driving after taking it.
Kratom is not particularly habit forming. Many people say that marijuana is not habit forming which I would have to agree with, although there are many users who enjoy using kratom on a regular and ongoing basis. If used sparingly on a recreational basis the risk of forming a habit is virtually zero. If used every day then like most any drug (alcohol, coffee, marijuana etc) you may very well form a habit which you may find hard to break.
Kratom is illegal in Australia, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), and Thailand . It is legal in most other countries, including the United States and all of Europe. There is no telling just how long it will remain legal in the United States but for now we can enjoy it legally.
There are many closely-related tryptamine alkaloids in kratom. The most important ones are mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. These are primarily responsible for kratom’s pain relieving, sedative, euphoric, and stimulating effects. These alkaloids resemble yohimbine in structure, but do not have the same effects.
Kratom is a little gem for those looking to legally decrease their social anxiety, general anxiety, and overall stress levels. Good things don’t seem to last forever so I recommend giving this herb a try while it is still legal.
